Tinnitus is a condition that very often is associated with hearing damage. Characterized by a hissing or rustling in your ear, and often a bit of the two, tinnitis, is always unpleasant and unsettling, it is not as a rule a serious problem. Approximately ninety percent of those who experience tinnitis do have hearing loss.

Ears Ring will generally accompany sensorineural hearing lossimpairment, because this hearing problem is caused by some form of harm to the inner ear organs and nerve endings. Otosclerosis, an affliction of the bones of the inner ear, can also cause hearing loss and tinnitis, also harm to the delicate organs of the inner and middle ear caused by certain prescription drugs such as aspirin and many anti-biotics. Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, or TMJ, can affect the muscles of the face, jaw and may also result in tinnitus, although, in this case, hearing loss does not generally result.

Trauma and injury, especially proximity to explosions and sudden, loud noises at extremely close range, could also result in tinnitus, and generally hearing impairment too. Regrettably, in this situation, the auditory loss as well as the ear ringing are usually permanent.

Several conditions not normally associated with auditory impairment may also be responsible for tinnitis. These include anemia, hypertension, arteriosclerosis and low levels of thyroid hormone. Normally the ringing in the ears exists without any type of hearing impairment; the tinnitis, however, will have an adverse affect on hearing capability in most cases.
